Wow-- today marks 30 weeks of being pregnant. Feels like we're really in the home stretch. Can't believe that in about 10 weeks or so, we'll be parents. In many ways this just seems like a bit of a dream. Granted, I look down at my growing belly and feel the kicks everyday, which make it seem very real, but I will say that there is also a little bit of a surreal feeling as well. We've wanted this for a long time-- and for awhile, although we were hopeful, we really didn't know if it would be a real possibility for us.
Somehow, reaching the 30 week mark feels like quite an accomplishment. And medically, it truly is. With today's medical advancements, a baby being born at 30 weeks has an 85% survival rate. Not that we want Little B to arrive at such an early time, because we don't. There's still lots of development and growing that needs to occur. It is comforting, though, to know that we've finally reached a bit of a "safe" place.
Just what's happening inside Hotel W at 30 weeks?
- At this point, the average baby weighs between 3-4 lbs and measures about 17 inches. From weeks 30-37, Little B will put on about a half pound a week as he/she bulks up!
- Little B is also able to use all five of his/her senses. The baby can see, smell, taste, touch, and hear sounds. There is still much developing of these senses that needs to occur...for example, when born, a baby's vision is about 20/400...but the senses are on their way.
- Toes & toenails are fully developed at this point. Speaking of toes...Mama needs a pedicure. Time to get that scheduled :)
