My mom brought up a really great point...and I thought I'd run with it.... as much as I feel these last weeks are "dragging" on like RuPaul, it could be much worse....meaning way longer.
Zebras are pregnant for a year.
Giraffes are pregnant for about 450 days...15 months. Eek. And with those long legs, I can only imagine the types of kicks that expecting mom gets!
Some species of whales are pregnant for 500 days..or about 17 months. At least they don't have ankles that can swell :)
Elephants carry their babies for 19-22 months!
The Frilled Shark also has it pretty rough-- their gestational period is...get this... 3 and a half years! 1260 days! Just imagine what that peapod due date tracker would look like!
Since I was having fun doing research...I also took a look at the animal with the shortest gestational period. Hats off to some of those fun Marsupials, like the opossum, who have the shortest gestational period....12-13 days and then into the pouch they go.
As for Little B at 39 weeks....he/she is about the size of a watermelon and is preparing him/herself for life outside of Hotel W (or at least she/he is supposed to be at least pondering a big exit...hear that, Little B???? Kidding). In preparation, the baby is working on refining reflexes and muscle movements, such as blinking, sucking, inhaling and exhaling. These "practice breathing" acitivites are what cause all the hiccups (which always make me smile and laugh).

Dear Kris,
this is just a warning by Little B.
What he/she is saying : "Look Mom and Dad, this is just a little hint, subtle hint, to let you know that mmmmm i am the boss. No matter what you may think, or plan, or study... i OWN the heartstrings to your heart, your thoughts, your worries, your happiness, look at my eyes and repeat after me : I WILL BE ON YOUR MIND FOR THE REST OF YOUR DAYS".
lol Jokes apart, this is true, and i fully agree with the doctor for postponing any inducing of labor. Well, unless it's Xmas .... ;)
I know , i know you may not be liking all of this humor right now, but it is said in good will.
My friend Amy had a long labor, and i did too with Mike, and i believe because it was too close to the due date. Little B's bags are just not quite zipped up yet but he or she is ready to do it at a second notice.... and then the marvel of it all will hit all of us "in waiting".
I have just 2 rounds left on the "bengals" blanket, maybe that is what the future fan is waiting for?
My date is for the 11th, and yes, i reluctantly give up the wish for having the same birthday bith grandbaby... (Turkey day). I'd rather be cooking and watching you holding the watermellon in your arms!
with love
Mamma G.
Dear Kris, Mike and Little B,
I'll never forget the doctor warning me that Becky, because she was so close to Erik, would be popping out--in all likelihood--2 weeks early. Unbeknownst to me, Becky was asserting her own personality already and was absolutely determined to enjoy the luxuries in life, including Hotel W. She arrived 2 weeks late, making for the longest month you can imagine! It also enormously complicated and extended Nana Doane's travel plans exponentially.
Anyway, my dear, Little B will exert him/herself whenever the time is right and it suits. Besides, it's good for you to learn early that time schedules will forever from now be somewhat beyond your control. Go get a massage, pedicure and facial and enjoy luxuriatingly long showers. You deserve it. AND they may be your last for quite a spell.
Love you,
"Great" Aunt Nancy
